Great news for graduates! We’re open throughout Mondays – including lunchtimes – on Monday 10th, 17th and 24th of July, specifically to provide the perfect option for a graduation celebration in style with friends and family. Of course it’s also another option for anyone to enjoy sun-soaked lunches on Monday, including from our popular new Menú Rápido.

El Gato Negro is the ideal location for celebrating graduation on any day of the week, enjoying our acclaimed food and drinks in the surroundings of our beautiful award-winning restaurant. Plus there’s a free glass of cava for the graduate with any pre-booked table, to add some extra sparkle to the celebration and toast their achievements.

We’ve even created an exclusive cocktail for the special occasion, available throughout July. The Graduation is a mix of raspberry-infused Manchester Gin, cherry-infused bourbon and cava, garnished with raspberry dust, coconut and bourbon-soaked cherry. At just £8.50 this is bound to graduate with first-class honours!

For more information or to book a table, please phone our dedicated host team on 0161 694 8585 or book online.

The Graduation Cocktail at El Gato Negro

With the recent spell of sunshine and warm weather, a profusion of flowers and leaves everywhere, and the very welcome return of longer evenings, it’s definitely springtime in the city. Spring always brings new growth and change, and we’re delighted to announce the introduction of new menus for spring 2017 at El Gato Negro.

Simon and Richard have refreshed the restaurant menu, adding an array of delicious new dishes celebrating seasonal produce and flavours. Regular customers may spot dishes which proved so popular as specials they’ve been included on the regular menu. These include the spectacular Pig cheeks with parsley root and apple purée, and morcilla; and LED tomato, Monte Enebro goats cheese and watermelon salad, with mint and basil.

A couple of our modern classics have also made it back onto the menu by popular demand: the chargrilled onglet steak with patatas a lo pobre, as well as Gillardeau oysters, yuzu juice, wasabi tobiko and pickled cucumber.

With a comprehensive selection of options for diners who require gluten free or vegetarian dishes, we’re sure the menu will delight everyone who dines at El Gato Negro.

In response to customer feedback we’ve also introduced a brand new lunch option to complement our main menu – the ‘Menú Rápido’. This menu has been developed to offer customers a curated range of dishes that can be enjoyed when there’s less time to enjoy a leisurely lunchtime dining experience. Perfect when you’re limited for time, and speedy service is as important as quality of the dishes you know and love. The ‘Menú Rápido’ is available during lunch service from Tuesday to Friday, alongside our main menu.

A classic El Gato Negro dish, marrying smoky rich Spanish flavours with a superlative English cider. A great riff on pork and apple!

Mini Catalan Chorizo in Aspall Cider

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 300g mini chorizo dulce (available from Brindisa & selected supermarkets) or good cooking chorizo
  • 500ml chicken stock
  • 200ml Aspall cider (cyder)
  • 50ml sherry vinegar
  • 50g chicken gravy granules
  • 25g fresh flat leaf parsley

Method

Cut chorizo into 3cm pieces. Gently warm in a non-stick pan until the oil starts to come out of the sausage. Carefully remove chorizo from the pan, leaving the oil in place.

Add the sherry vinegar to the oil and reduce over low heat to make a syrup. Add the cider and reduce again. Add the chicken stock and reduce by half. Whisk in gravy granules to thicken.

Once the sauce is thick enough to coat to the back of a spoon, add the chorizo and cook for a further two min or until warmed through. Finish with chopped parsley. Enjoy!

Congratulations to Keeley Buckley who has won our #HungryForTapas competition, which we launched after Simon’s Sunday Brunch appearance.
Competition winner
We had loads of fantastic, mouth-watering entries, and the team spent a long time deliberating the merits of each of them. We were particularly pleased to see several people made Simon’s Chargrilled Onglet with Patatas a lo Pobre!
In the end though, the sheer variety and confidence of Keeley’s epic tapas selection determined her win. She wins an exclusive meal for two with a bottle of wine during our opening week. Well done… we’ll look forward to seeing you in February Keeley!
There’s not just one winner though; as the standard of entries was so good, everyone who entered wins some a prize. We’ll be reaching out to the runners-up and should be seeing them at our new restaurant in King Street in the new year, when no doubt they’ll be #HungryForTapas too!

The news you’ve been waiting for… our doors reopen at 6pm this evening, after a short and refreshing summer break in Manchester, Barcelona and beyond. The restaurant is open as usual this evening, then again on Saturday from 6pm, then we will be open through from Tuesday 6pm. It’s good to be back!

The team is ready and we’re launching with a brand-new food menu. Although we’re hoping summer’s not completely over yet, this menu sets us up perfectly to embrace the shorter days ahead, with a range of exciting new dishes. You can browse the whole menu here… as well as the desserts menu we launched last month.

We are also very excited to be launching our brand-new wine menu, which we have been trailing and testing for some time in anticipation of unveiling it. We have significantly increased the number of wines (almost all of which are Spanish), and it’s jam-packed with incredible (and sometimes exclusive) wines. As Simon says…

We’re proud to offer you a superlative selection of Iberian wines, focusing wherever possible on smaller artisanal producers and the very best examples of varietals. I hope you take pleasure in discovering some lesser-known gems which we’ve worked hard to track down.

We’ll shortly be adding a dedicated new wines page to the website; in the meantime you can view/download a PDF of the full new wine list here.

And, as we’ve hinted before we have a series of new tasting events coming up in the autumn and early winter. There’s one per month and they’re going to be rather special… so keep your eyes peeled as we’ll be announcing them next week to newsletter subscribers and our followers on social media and here on the website!

Last night’s event, with our friend Jaime Quiroga, was a resounding success. Here’s a small photo gallery of the event in case you weren’t there.

EGN-Galician-FB-cover-v2

We’re delighted to welcome wine expert Jaime Quiroga back to El Gato Negro, after the runaway success of last summer’s ‘A Taste of Galicia’ event.

Last year Jaime delighted guests with his introduction to wines from this lesser-known corner of Spain, while Simon and the team created a menu to perfectly partner these flavours: we’ve been consistently asked when we would hold another with a similar theme. The good news is Jaime is returning to showcase some wines you may have experienced before (both the Casal de Paula wines have become firm favourites with customers) and some you may not have.

Simon visited Galicia  – a land of geographical contrasts and culinary bounty – in March and returned to the restaurant, inspired by the food and drink culture he encountered and eager to share this with a wider audience.

We’re excited to present the evening’s menu, featuring a selection of six superb Galician wines from the region’s independent vineyards, matched with a sumptuous tasting menu of flavours to evoke the experience of the mountains and coastline of Galicia.

Leira Seca
Artisan Galician charcuterie and our own house pickles

Quinta de la Erre Albariño
Hand-picked white crab meat, avocado purée and gazpacho

Casal de Paula Blanco
Chargrilled Galician-style octopus

Alodio Mencia
Poached duck egg yolk with Alejandro chorizo and migas breadcrumbs

Casal de Paula Tinto
Escabeche of quail

Sensum
Torta de Santiago with vanilla ice cream

Please note: the event was fully booked up in record time. Each event we hold is more popular than the last, and we only have limited places in order to keep the atmosphere intimate and engaging. To keep informed of our forthcoming special events, sign up for our newsletter, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
